Allan McGregor reveals reason behind extending Rangers stay

Veteran goalkeeper Allan McGregor has revealed that Rangers run in the Europa League played a key role in his decision of extending his stay at the Ibrox Stadium.

The 40-year-old’s future was in doubt after his contract ended at the end of the season but extended his stay with the club for another 12 months.

McGregor was quoted in a report by Daily Record that revealed that the Gers’ journey in the Europa League played a key role in his decision.

“I don’t think you ever lose [the hunger to play] to be honest with you,” he said. “Even the competitiveness when you’re older, when you’re 50-odd, I don’t think you’ll ever lose it. You can’t lose it when you’re a player at a club that needs to win every time.

“After the first few days after the season finished, I wasn’t really thinking about anything.

“Then I went on holiday, spoke to a few folk and did reflect [on things]. I felt I did take more in when we won games last season.

“Looking back on it, it was great, with some great nights and great atmospheres. As a player, you always want to play in games like that.”

Goalkeeping position

Regardless of what the plans are related to McGregor, we can safely say that Giovanni van Bronckhorst has sorted the Rangers goalkeeping position for the next season.

In the recently concluded season, the veteran played 26 league games and conceded only 22 goals. He kept 12 clean sheets and played 79% of the overall minutes in the Scottish League. [Transfermarkt].

However, it was his run in the Europa League that made him a huge favourite among Rangers fans.

The veteran keeper was sensational all the way through, especially in the knockout stages. He would definitely like to rewind back to the penalty shootout again where he, unfortunately, came second-best.

The 40-year-old will not just be another squad member of Rangers, he will provide a winning mentality to the club. He is one of those players who won the league title under Steven Gerrard.

Considering there is a set of players who will be leaving the Ibrox Stadium this year, it is important for Van Bronckhorst to keep hold of players who know how to win important titles.

In other Rangers news, scouts at Ibrox are said to have watched this ‘immense’ powerhouse numerous times ahead of a potential major transfer
