Sunderland open contract talks with Ross Stewart amid Rangers transfer link

Sunderland have opened contract talks with their talisman striker Ross Stewart amid interest from Rangers, as reported by Football League World.

A host of clubs including Middlesbrough, Burnley, West Brom and Blackburn Rovers are also vying for his signature.

The 25-year-old is tied down until the summer of 2024 as he has a 12-month option on his current terms, but the Black Cats want to secure his future with a new contract.

Stewart enjoyed a fantastic 2021-22 campaign where he scored 26 goals for Sunderland.

He scored in the play-off semi-final first-leg win over Sheffield Wednesday as well as in the final which shows that he is a big-match player.

It is due to his heroics that Sunderland have moved back to the Championship. Amazingly, he started in every one of the club’s 49 League One and play-off clashes, which shows his remarkable fitness.

Alex Rae hailed him as “prolific” in an interview on 9 June as quoted by the Daily Record (printed edition, page 44).

Ideally, Stewart should be Rangers’ top priority signing to replace Alfredo Morelos who could leave Ibrox this summer.

The Colombian striker has just one year left on his deal, and it doesn’t make sense to run down his contract when he can leave for a high transfer fee.

Before he commits his future at the Stadium of Light, Rangers must make a tempting offer and secure his signature.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have their sights on a new defender who’s been deemed as surplus to requirements south of the border.
