BBC journalist Tom English slams SPFL as Rangers announcement made on Wednesday
BBC Scotland journalist Tom English suggests the SPFL wasted money on their legal battle with Rangers over the Cinch sponsorship deal.
It was confirmed on Wednesday (15 June) that Rangers are excluded from a new agreement between the SPFL and the car company due to a conflict with Douglas Park’s company Park’s Motor Group.
SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster confirms that “the overall income to Scottish football is expected to remain materially unchanged over the original five-year term of the sponsorship”.

A Rangers spokesperson told Rangers Review: “This is a full vindication of our stance throughout the past season and further highlights wide ranging concerns regarding the corporate governance of the SPFL.”
After the news was confirmed, BBC Scotland’s English took to social media to react, suggesting that the SPFL seem to have wasted time and money with their dispute with the Light Blues.
“So the torturous SPFL vs Rangers legal saga over Cinch ends,” said English via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday night (15 June).
“Rangers don’t have to carry Cinch branding. That was their point from day one.
“How much is this going to cost the SPFL in legal fees? No mention of that in the SPFL statement.
“All of this could have been avoided.”
Idiotic
How long has it taken and how much money has been wasted by Doncaster in trying to challenge Rangers?
Why should the club be forced to endorse a company that very clearly conflicts with the business assets of the chairman and the club itself?
It’s ridiculous that this was even thought to be a good idea by the SPFL and by Doncaster but at this point, nothing surprises us anymore.
Doncaster’s SPFL is a joke and it’ll continue to be at the centre of pathetic dramas like this until there’s a major change there.
There have been continual hard-line stances from the SPFL over this issue – all for nothing.
As Jonny McFarlane of Rangers Review put it, there are “whole rainforests of wasted newsprint”.
Rangers might not get any money from the new deal with Cinch but in all honesty, is it even worth it? The SPFL have undersold their product for years and years and it’s unlikely to be anywhere near what the club can pull in from other areas.
In other Rangers news, this player is set to exit Ibrox in a deal worth over £20million.
