Rory Wilson Rangers depature indicates more has to be done to keep young talent at Ibrox

Rory Wilson is set to sign for Aston Villa and his departure is an indication that more needs to be done to keep young talent at Rangers.

The Guardian’s Fabrizio Romano revealed on his personal Twitter account on Monday (13 June) that the 16-year-old striker is set to sign for the Premier League side with Steven Gerrard being a key influence in his decision.

However, as reported by The Athletic on 14 June, Rangers believe they will receive a fee for the young striker.

Regardless of the deal and potential fee Rangers could receive, more could be done to keep younger players at Ibrox.

Granted, it is financially hard to compete with the wealth of the Premier League, but the Gers must convince younger players that remaining at Ibrox is the best option for their progression.

18-year-old Alex Lowry has performed well since being given a first-team chance by Giovanni van Bronckhorst and he should be an example to any prospects coming through the Gers academy.

Josh McPake is an example of a player who has been loaned out countless times and has yet to be given a proper first-team chance.

Jake Hastie is another example of a younger player who has never really been given a first-team chance at Ibrox.

If Rangers want to keep their promising youngsters at the club, they must start giving them the best chance of developing and ensuring their best young talent don’t get lost in a series of unsuccessful loan deals.

In other Rangers news, the club are ‘not convinced’ by a key first-team player and an early termination of his contract is extremely likely.
