Mateo Cassierra not high on Rangers transfer priority list

PFC Sochi striker Mateo Cassierra is not high on the transfer priority list for Rangers this summer, according to Football Scotland.

The 25-year-old scored 14 goals in 22 games in the Russian Premier League during 2021-22 but with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine seeing them damned by the sporting world, players from those teams need to find a new club.

Sochi demanded £8.5million for the Colombian but the Light Blues are not willing to pay that much [The Fourth Official on Patreon] which appears to have ended their immediate pursuit.

Cassierra himself is keen to join up with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side at Ibrox as The Fourth Official reported via Twitter on 1 June that he had plenty of clubs interested but Glasgow caught his eye more than any other.

He has just 12 months left on his current contract at PFC Sochi who may see that as a reason to sell now while they still can but with his name not near the top of the list for Rangers, a move is not going to be closed imminently.

Baffling

14 goals in 22 games is a fantastic record in any top division and it would certainly help Rangers catapult themselves back above Celtic in the race to be kings of Scotland.

We do already have Alfredo Morelos at our disposal but he too will see his current contract expire in June 2023 and van Bronckhorst can’t be certain the also 25-year-old, also Colombian Bears striker will still be available for much longer.

He could yet leave before the new season kicks off which would leave just Kemar Roofe as a recognised striker and Joe Aribo capable of doing a job as a false nine as he did towards the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

With a need for another number nine, it seems strange to not be trying harder to sign another, especially when there is such a cheap alternative with a sensational record available and willing to come.

In other Rangers news, with a Turkish club gaining more interest in this Bears defender, van Bronckhorst should look to sell as soon as possible.
