Signing Ross Stewart to replace Alfredo Morelos will be gamble for Rangers

Rangers are once again linked with a move for Sunderland striker Ross Stewart as a potential replacement for Alfredo Morelos this summer, according to the Northern Echo.

The Gers enjoyed an impressive 2021-22 season as they reached the Europa League final where they suffered a heartbreaking defeat against eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

It is believed that manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst is keen to build on the last season’s success by adding a quality striker to their arsenal.

Another reason for the Gers to make a move is that star striker Alfredo Morelos is entering in the final year of his contract with the club.

Big gamble

Stewart was one of the best players not just for Sunderland but in League One in 2021-22. In the 46 games he played for the Black Cats, he scored 24 goals and provided five assists along with having 2.8 shots per outing [Transfermarkt]

Due to his performances with the Saints, the young striker is likely to make his debut for the Scotland National Team on June 14 when they play Armenia.

Rangers have made progress in their previous seasons and want to close the gap on Celtic next season. For that to happen, they will need players who are at least at par with the squad last season.

Keeping that in mind, making a move for someone so young in Stewart to replace Morelos seems to be a big gamble, especially considering that his performances came in the third-tier of English football which might not be enough for him to replicate his success in top-flight football in Scotland, nevermind in Europe.
