Rangers must sell winger Glenn Middleton this summer
Rangers must offload winger Glenn Middleton this summer.
The Gers are faced with a very delicate situation this summer, where they have to sort out the contract situations of several players.
As many as 17 players are in the final years of their deals, as reported by The Scotsman on 9 June.
Already the Bears have agreed contract extension deals for Connor Goldson and Steven Davis, and Ryan Jack could be handed a new deal as well.
One player who should be allowed to leave is Middleton.
He has just one year left on his deal, and at the moment, it doesn’t look like Giovanni van Bronckhorst will offer him a new deal.
The 22-year-old joined Rangers from Norwich City in 2018. He came with a lot of promise, but his spell at Ibrox hasn’t been remarkable.
In his first season at the club, he managed 15 appearances, scoring five goals, but after that, he has been plying trade elsewhere, on loan.
Despite the early promise shown by him under Steven Gerrard, he failed to capitalise on that, and gradually faded away.
Last season, he made 31 appearances in all competitions on loan at St Johnstone, but it wasn’t anything spectacular.
Van Bronckhorst has a wealth of options in the attacking midfield and wing positions, and one struggles to see how Middleton would fit in.
He is way down the pecking order, and truth be told, he is not even in the Dutchman’s plans.
Middleton should move elsewhere where he can get regular games. An exit from Ibrox is likely.
