Chris Sutton doesn’t think Rangers need six signings this summer

Chris Sutton has suggested in his column for The Daily Record (11 June) that Rangers do not need to buy six players in the summer to catch Celtic.

There have been suggestions that the Gers need to add more quality in their ranks to catch Celtic who lifted the Scottish Premiership title last season.

However, Sutton suggested that the Gers were guilty of complacency, and Celtic took advantage of that.

“This notion Rangers are a busload of signings away from catching them just doesn’t add up to me,” wrote Sutton for The Daily Record.

“I saw it being stated Giovanni van Bronckhorst might need as many as six signings to get back ahead of Celtic in the title sprint next season.

“Not sure I’m buying that, to be honest.

“Rangers were guilty of complacency last summer when they thought they had their foot on Celtic’s throats.

“They paid the price for not strengthening properly when they were ahead and that is not a mistake Postecoglou can, or will, make.”

Big summer

This is going to be a huge summer for the Gers, and it seems Giovanni van Bronckhorst already working on his plans.

The club have secured contract extensions of two very important players in Connor Goldson and Steven Davis and it remains to be seen if they do the same with other players.

The likes of Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos have just a year left on their deals, and it will be a big decision for the club whether to keep them or sell them for a profit.

In case, they take the second option, Van Bronckhorst will have to find a way to replenish the void.

Of the three, Morelos is most likely to leave the club. The Colombian striker has been outstanding for the club, and Rangers will not want to lose him for free.

Ryan Jack is another player who has a contract until 2023, but there is a high chance that the 30-year-old will extend his stay at the club. [Daily Record, 10 June].

In other Rangers news, one of van Bronckhorst’s current first-team regulars has refused to rule out the possibility of leaving Ibrox this summer.
