Rangers need ‘five or six’ new signings this summer – Charlie Nicholas

Rangers were unable to retain their Scottish Premiership title in 2021-22 and Charlie Nicholas believes there needs to be big investment this summer.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst had a tough job on his hands as the Light Blues competed on three fronts all the way to the end of the season but only collected one piece of silverware in the Scottish Cup.

Nicholas believes that the 2022-23 campaign will be a more fruitful one for the Bears but thinks there is plenty of work to be done in the transfer market before then.

Rangers

“Rangers will absolutely be stronger next season under Giovanni,” he said to Bonus Code Bets. “Van Bronckhorst has done well as a new coach, and it’s okay saying the fundamentals are okay but Rangers were just in freefall at the time and Celtic started to overtake them in the Scottish Premier League.

“It stabilised it a little bit during the season, but van Bronckhorst didn’t have a number nine. He wasn’t trying to play like Pep, Morelos was just injured, and no one else was available.

“Kemar Roofe, in all honesty, is not a brilliant number nine, but he does do a job for you. Van Bronckhorst stabilised the squad, got it together after a few injuries, and some movement in the transfer window.

“I thought he did a magnificent job taking them to a final in the Europa League and they will get stronger next season. He needs five or six players to make this a strong squad, challenging Celtic and in the Europa League.”

Get on with it

It’s all well and good saying we need to make this many signings but it’s all irrelevant if the board don’t start putting the wheels in motion on some of our reported targets.

The boss himself will be eager to start getting new faces through the door at Auchenhowie and build a squad capable of usurping Celtic and reclaiming the Premiership title in the 2022-23 season.

John Souttar is the first to have arrived in Glasgow on a pre-contract agreement but van Bronckhorst can’t perform miracles with just one new central defender.

An additional striker to provide cover for the injury-prone Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe should be priority number one with a winger to complete the attacking trio also high on the agenda.

Perhaps he also needs a new goalkeeper and central midfielder to make up four of the “five or six” Nicholas suggests but they won’t just turn up on our doorstep.

In other Rangers news, the club have exceeded their high expectations for revenue during the 2021-22 season after unparalleled support.
