Calvin Bassey and Borna Barisic look set to remain at Rangers with no interest in Josh Tymon

Rangers look set to keep hold of their two senior left-back options as according to Derek Clark they aren’t in the market at the position.

Alan Nixon had reported on his Patreon that the Gers had Stoke full-back Josh Tymon high on their list for summer improvements and Croatian Barisic could be on the way out to fund a £5million move.

After outstanding performances in the Europa League Calvin Bassey has become the subject of heightened interest for a big-money move to England or Germany, with Aston Villa very prominent.

But Rangers Review writer Clark wrote on his personal Twitter Thursday morning [9 June]: “I’m reliably informed Rangers aren’t interested in Josh Tymon and the club are not in the market for a left back.”

That would heavily imply that both their current options are going nowhere.

Barisic endured an uneven campaign but played himself back into form at the business end of 2021/22, while Nigerian international Bassey increasingly excelled at both left-back and centre-back as the season went on.

Set

If Connor Goldson had left, as Leon Balogun, has then it would have been likely for Bassey shift into the centre full time alongside new arrival John Souttar.

But the former Brighton player signed a surprise new deal, and the club have made quite plain from the off that they aren’t letting Bassey go for cheap.

Their insistence, reported by Sky Sports, on a Scottish record fee appears to have calmed the pursuit of him, with Villa subsequently signing Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.

After some shaky performances it could have been the plan to upgrade on Barisic with Tymon, but if Bassey remains in place he would surely be the presumed starter on the left of a strong back line with Goldson, Souttar and captain James Tavernier.

In that scenario the 29-year-old Croatian would appear an able back-up, and spending money that could be used elsewhere on someone who is unlikely to want to sit on the bench wouldn’t make much sense.

An offer the club can’t refuse could still come in for Bassey and chance the situation but currently they appear they may be happy to stick with what they have in that department.

In other Rangers news, the botched inquiry into the club is set to top a massive £100million in costs.
