Rangers begin negotiations with Schalke over Rabbi Matondo transfer

Rangers have engaged in talks with Schalke over the potential transfer of Welsh winger Rabbi Matondo, according to Wales Online.

The 21-year-old struggled in Germany and was sent out on loan to Cercle Brugge in Belgium where he racked up 10 goals in the Pro League in 27 appearances.

De Vereniging, though, have not activated an option to make the move permanent this summer so the Welsh international is available to the highest bidder and Rangers want to be that team.

They face competition from their Old Firm rivals Celtic though who have also entered talks with the Bundesliga 2 champions and there is more interest from big clubs in Belgium such as Club Brugge and Anderlecht.

Wales Online also reported back on 19 May that the Gers were keen to sign Matondo’s younger brother, Japhet, from Cardiff City and they were again in a battle with the Hoops as well as Leeds United for the 16-year-old.

Attack complete

Currently in Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s front three, he has the striker and left-wing positions almost certainly guaranteed if everybody was fit at the same time.

Alfredo Morelos has been the undisputed leading man through the middle for a few years now and he should’ve so again for the 2022-23 season even though his contract expires in 12 months’ time.

Englishman Ryan Kent has also been relatively unrivalled on the left-hand side and has been the hero on many occasions for the Bears during his time in Glasgow.

But the right-wing has not had a clear standout for a while and Matondo could come in and be that for van Bronckhorst to complete his lethal attacking trio.

The Scottish Premiership would be quaking in their boots with those three lining up alongside each other in attack, especially Celtic who clearly know his ability to be chasing the same deal we are.

In other Rangers news, this fringe player at Ibrox has been urged to leave the club in order to keep his career trajectory heading in the right direction.
