Jon McLaughlin is tipped to be Rangers number one next season with veteran goalkeeper Allan McGregor yet to enter contract negotiations, according to Sky Sports.

The 40-year-old, who has been at Rangers since 2018 hasn’t begun negotiations to sign a new contract with the Glasgow club, although they’re both keen to open discussions.

And McLaughlin, who started the Scottish Cup final against Hearts; where Rangers went on to win 2-0 is believed to be in prime position to become the new number one goalkeeper at Ibrox next season, according to Sky Sports.

A great servant

Having racked up 117 appearances for the Gers, there is no doubt that McGregor has been a tremendous servant for the club, and it will be sad to see such a talented goalkeeper leave Rangers.

And former Scotland and Rangers striker Kris Boyd has backed McGregor to stay at Rangers for the foreseeable future.

Speaking to Sky Sports last month, Boyd said: “I’ve played with Allan and know how good he is. I can’t answer for Allan regarding what is next for him but if he’s played 40-plus games this season then for me it isn’t time to hang up the gloves.

“Being the ‘keeper at a club like Rangers is not easy. In some games you might not have lots to do but then you need to step up when needed and produce big saves. Allan has shown he can do that, and he is a leader.

“You’re a long time retired and I think he’d be great for Rangers to keep around and even help younger players come through.”

McGregor is a great player to have in the dressing room too and his experience will bode well for the rest of the team if he does decide to remain at Rangers for some time longer.

As it currently stands, it appears McLaughlin will be Rangers’ number one for the foreseeable future and certainly next season. The former Hearts shot-stopper also has a vast amount of experience at 34 years of age.

It will be hard to move on, but nothing has been decided yet and if McGregor does decide to stay, he will be more determined than ever to win back the SPFL title and bring it back to the blue half of Glasgow.

In other Rangers news, the Gers want to seal a multi-million deal to sign this player – but they’ll need to sell a mainstay first.
