Rangers loan-to-buy deal for Jack Butland could impact Allan McGregor’s contract decision
Alan Nixon has mooted on his Patreon page that Rangers are interested in a loan-to-buy option for Jack Butland this summer and if a deal happens, Allan McGregor’s contract decision is simple.
It has been reported [The Athletic, 3 June], that a deal is on the table for the 40-year-old goalkeeper.
The former Scotland number one is yet to make a decision on his future but should the Gers make a move for 29-year-old Butland, McGregor should certainly contemplate calling it a day.

McGregor has enjoyed a memorable season at Ibrox and was integral in their run to the Europa League final, making some crucial saves for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.
However, McGregor must realise that it is time to hang up his gloves whilst he is still remembered fondly by the Ibrox faithful.
He needs to consider whether he can feasibly recreate what he has done this season for Rangers.
As much as Rangers were superb in getting to the Europa League final, it is very unlikely that they will be able to replicate that feat again in the 2022-23 campaign.
Furthermore, the news of Butland’s potential move should indicate to the 41-year-old that there is a strong chance he won’t be the Gers’ number one next season.

He has to ask himself the question of whether another season playing the occasional cup match and sitting on the bench is how he wants to finish his career.
McGregor also needs to put the club’s needs ahead of his at present.
Realistically, Rangers need to recruit a younger goalkeeper who will provide them with a long-term option.
If McGregor decided to stay, it will prolong their search for another keeper for at least another season.
