Rangers must sell Alfredo Morelos while they can to emulate Celtic windfall

Alfredo Morelos is undoubtedly the best striker at Rangers right now and his presence was certainly missed towards the end of the 2021-22 season.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst had to rely on Kemar Roofe and, when he was out injured, Joe Aribo to lead the line and the Bears never showed the same threat as they did with the Colombian international up top.

The 25-year-old is expected to be back fit for the start of the 2022-23 season which will also coincidently be the last of his current contract at Ibrox.

The boss will be extremely glad to have our talisman back in the fold again to help challenge for the Scottish Premiership title and Europa League honours to right the wrongs of last season.

But with his contract expiring in 12 months’ time, maybe Rangers would be best cashing in on the Colombian before he leaves Glasgow for free in the summer of 2023.

There are a number of reasons why we shouldn’t do such a thing, him being head and shoulders above the rest being the obvious one, but for a very good reason why we need to sell hi, we should look to the green side of the city.

Celtic could be about to pocket a huge seven-figure windfall from Lyon as they near the sale of their former number nine Moussa Dembele [Scottish Daily Express] as they had a 10% sell-on clause in the deal to let him head back to France.

We could definitely put a similar or even bigger clause in the deal if we sell Morelos and then massively profit from him a second time when he is sold by whichever club decides to buy him.

That could be 15, 20, 25% or more and we would get far more than the Hoops are set to in a few years’ time.

This needs a lot of long-term thinking but we will be far better off profiting from the Colombian now, and again in the near future, than having him play one more year and leaving for nothing at the end of it.

In other Rangers news, a teenage goalkeeper for the B team is set to be offered a new deal at Auchenhowie but he will be loaned out for the 2022-23 season.
