Rangers: Graham Turner takes pride in Connor Goldson development

Rangers managed to tie down Connor Goldson to a new four-year deal at Ibrox on Wednesday (1 June) after he looked set to leave on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old had been attracting Premier League interest with his contract expiring at the end of June, most notably from Nottingham Forest [Football League World], but he has now committed to the Light Blues until the summer of 2026.

The man who gave him his senior debut at Shrewsbury Tow, Graham Turner, has admitted that he takes great pride in seeing the Englishman succeed in Glasgow.

“He knew with some luck he would have a very good career,” Turner said to the Sun. “He had his heart scare at Brighton and that was a scary moment for him. It was a real setback at the time.

“It takes a lot of character to come back from something like that and then go on and have the career he has had.

“My contribution to his career wasn’t massive but I take a lot of pride to see where he is at Rangers and the player he has become. As well as a decent player, Connor was always a good athlete.

“He was quick over short distances, but if you went to do the longer stuff he was always head and shoulders above the others.”

Rock

Teams can often chop and change their starting line-ups on a far too regular basis and it becomes difficult for some players to maintain their place in the side as a result.

That makes Goldson’s ever-presence in the Gers’ backline even more incredible given the stresses and strains of modern football and the wealth of competition at Ibrox.

John Souttar will arrive at the club on 1 July to add even more defensive cover to go with Filip Helander, Leon Balogun, Leon King and the monsterous Calvin Bassey.

But despite all of this ability, none of them can push Goldson out of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side no matter what as the 29-year-old offers the complete defender to the Dutchman.

Had he left on a free transfer this summer, it would have been massively noticeable when the first game of the season rolled around but thankfully, we don’t need to worry about such a circumstance because our rock is staying for a while longer.

In other Rangers news, this teenager is set to be offered a new deal with the Bears but he’ll spend the 2022-23 season away from the club on loan.
