Rangers’ Calvin Bassey is on a ‘different level’ according to BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji

BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji was blown away by Rangers defender Calvin Bassey’s performance despite Nigeria suffering a 1-0 defeat to Ecuador on Friday (3 June).

Bassey played the whole match at left-back alongside Rangers teammate Joe Aribo.

After the friendly match at the Red Bull Arena in New York, Okeleji was full of praise for the Gers defender.

He tweeted [3 June]: “Calvin Bassey is on a different level.”

He’s not wrong

Bassey has gone from strength to strength this season and has also made an impact on the international stage.

His performances for the Super Eagles would’ve only raised his stock further.

Despite reported interest in him, the 22-year-old would be better off staying at Ibrox beyond the summer.

He has been superb this season but it is important to remember that it is just one season.

He needs to show that he can perform at his current level on a consistent basis and continuing to play first-team football at Ibrox will only aid that.

He is still very young and has time to continue his development and would be far better off remaining under the stewardship of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

He has the ability to play Premier League football, but ultimately a young player needs to be playing regular football to fulfil their potential.

With the defender contracted to the Gers until 2024, he should at the very least remain at Ibrox until next summer.

The Rangers boss will be desperate to keep the defender at the club.
