Source close to Ibrox board: Rangers will not pay £8.5million for Mateo Cassierra

A source close to the Ibrox board has confirmed that Rangers will not be paying anywhere near £8.5million for Mateo Cassierra this summer, according to The Fourth Official.

The online source was told that the Bears do hold an interest in the PFC Sochi striker after he admitted that Giovanni van Bronckhorst knows of him from their time in Holland.

It is suggested that the talisman himself would like to move to Glasgow, but the asking price is set to be a major sticking point, as things stand.

Writing on their Patreon page on Wednesday afternoon [01 June], the Fourth Official shared what their source told them about the potential move.

“I was contacted by a source close to this move (not Rangers), and he confirmed Rangers’ interest in the striker,” they wrote. “However, when pressed on how close the move is in reality, I was told that the player has several options but Rangers is where Cassierra wants to move.

“Separately, I had another conversation with a source close to the Ibrox board, and he told me categorically that Rangers would not be paying anywhere close to £8.5m for the striker.”

No chance.

Cassierra may be someone of interest to improve our options in the final third, but that doesn’t mean we should just throw money at him or Sochi.

The Colombian did score 14 goals and add six assists in the Russian League last season, but one good season does not justify that huge fee.

Ross Wilson is the master of pulling off a bargain transfer when it never looked like happening, and he also did the same in contract negotiations with Connor Goldson, when it looked like he was going.

Cassierra wanting the move to Ibrox could work in our favour, as he could force his way out with a transfer request, but the price would still need to likely be halved.

Cedric Itten has left the club, and there will be speculation surrounding Alfredo Morelos throughout the summer regardless of his injury so this one is certainly one to watch.
