Connor Goldson had bigger offers elsewhere but chose to stay at Rangers

Rangers defender Connor Goldson had bigger offers to sign elsewhere but preferred to stay at Ibrox, according to Four Lads Had A Dream.

The defender appeared to be on his way out of the club with his contract expiring but a shock Wednesday announcement (1 June) revealed he had signed a new four-year deal, which the official partners referred to as “sensational news”.

The strong relationship between the former Brighton player and sporting director Ross Wilson was apparently key to the negotiations, and it has been possible to keep hold of a key component of the first team without having to offer astronomical wages.

Four Lads Had A Dream wrote on Twitter after the re-signing was announced: “Further news on this.

“Connor Goldson & Ross Wilson extremely close, was never going to be a quick renewal & both in contact throughout.

“Rangers have not broken wage structure to keep Goldson, not about money, he turned down bigger offers.

“Club & player delighted at the deal”.

Building block

There really doesn’t seem to be a catch to this development, with a key player kept on at an acceptable price and clearly motivated to fight for the club.

The fact that it was a complete surprise made it seem all the more of a bonus when it was announced.

With John Souttar now added to the fold as well the centre-back department is looking very strong.

Rangers

Attention will turn in a big way towards the future of Calvin Bassey now with the Nigerian international attracting significant interest from the English Premier League.

But since the Gers hold all the cards they can insist on a huge fee if they are going to let him go, and with Sky Sports reporting that he is “settled” but “open” to a move it shouldn’t be a problem either way.

If he is to go then it would make sense for it to be sooner rather than later so they have time to make use of whatever money comes in.

But if he has been priced out of a move, as Sun reporter Alan Nixon has suggested, he could potentially line up in a back-four next to Goldson, Souttar, and captain James Tavernier which would be an exciting prospect for Bears fans to look forward to.

In other Rangers news, a player has confirmed his links to the club and wants a move that is good for him sorted within a week.
