Celtic based journalists have encouraged Rangers to cash in on Calvin Bassey according to Sky Sports reporter

Rangers have been encouraged by some “Celtic based journalists” to cash in Calvin Bassey, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

The Rangers defender has been of interest to Aston Villa, with The Times suggesting that Steven Gerrard’s side were closing in on a deal for the 22-year-old.

However, despite the speculation, the Sky Sports reporter believes the defender will be in no hurry to leave Ibrox.

Talking to GIVEMESPORT on Wednesday: “There’s already cheeky articles from Celtic-based journalists in Scotland saying Rangers should cash in on him now, but I think that’s them being cheeky.

“He’s only 22 and he is in no rush to leave, so I think you’ll get a lot of that over the next few weeks.”

Stay put

Bassey would benefit immensely if he was to remain at Ibrox for at least one more season.

The defender has enjoyed an immense breakthrough campaign but still needs to develop further before making the step up to the Premier League.

The defender’s epic performance in the Europa League final should not be understated and neither should his performances in the previous rounds.

But the Premier League will test the defender against the very best, week in and week out.

Rangers

He has to be completely ready for the step up to England’s top flight.

He undoubtedly has all the attributes to be able to perform at the highest level, but it is important to remember that he was let go by Leicester City.

The 22-year-old shouldn’t try and engineer a way out of Ibrox, instead, he should remain consistent and maintain the level of performance that he has reached towards the end of the season.

There will be plenty of interest in the defender before the window slams shut.

It will be an intriguing summer at Ibrox.
