Rangers defender Connor Goldson set to join Nottingham Forest

Rangers vice-captain Connor Goldson appears set to leave on a free transfer with Nottingham Forest his next destination, according to Football League World.

The 29-year-old Englishman had been offered a new deal at Ibrox but he is expected to reject that offer in favour of a return to England with the Premier League newcomers after their Championship play-off final win.

He will leave Glasgow on a free transfer but Giovanni van Bronckhorst already has his replacement on his way with John Souttar coming on a pre-contract agreement on 1 July.

It could be a double blow for the Light Blues though as Steve Cooper looks to strengthen his side for the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers midfielder Joe Rothwell.

The 27-year-old is also out of contract this summer and Rangers were in the hunt to sign him [BBC Sport journalist Ian Dennis] but Football League World now expect him to head to the City ground having previously been almost certain to head north of the border to Ibrox.

Inevitable

Everybody already knew that Goldson’s time as a Rangers player was coming to an end even if we weren’t sure exactly where he was likely to go until right now.

He’s been a brilliant servant to the club since he joined from Brighton in 2018 and winning the Scottish Cup was a great way to send him off on a new adventure but he will certainly be missed around the training ground and on matchday.

Rangers

Rothwell is the one who will really annoy van Bronckhorst because it looked like he was heading to Glasgow from Lancashire and a deal can’t have been far away if that was really the case.

To lose him in favour of a newly-promoted Nottingham Forest is a worrying sign of the wealth in the Premier League and how players seem desperate to get their big payday over a chance to challenge for the league title and in continental competitions in Scotland.

In other Rangers news, this Auchenhowie teenager desperately needs a loan next season after an announcement on Tuesday (31 May) scuppered his first-team chance.
