Rangers confirm exit of Cedric Itten to BSC Young Boys
Rangers have confirmed that striker Cedric Itten has left the club to join Swiss Super League side BSC Young Boys for an undisclosed fee.
The 25-year-old Switzerland international arrived in Glasgow in the summer of 2020 from St Gallen where he had scored 19 goals in 34 games for the club the previous season.
He never hit those same heights in Scotland though, playing 49 times in all competitions and scoring just nine goals for the Light Blues.
The seven-time Swiss international heads back to his homeland after an unsuccessful spell in Scotland and he couldn’t even turn his fortunes around while on loan at Greuther Furth in the Bundesliga who ended up getting relegated.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst didn’t see Itten as a part of his side’s future having left the tall target man out of the starting XI even when Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe were both injured, preferring to play Joe Aribo as a false nine instead.
No harm
Itten will probably go down as one of Rangers’ failed signings and it’s great to see that we haven’t tried to persevere with him and cut ties, perhaps ruthlessly, as soon as we could.
He’s now played in Scotland and Germany to no real success so he will be very glad to be returning to his homeland where he had defenders wrapped around his little finger at his peak with St Gallen.

van Bronckhorst clearly didn’t trust the Swiss striker to be the leader he needed at any stage and whenever he did give him a chance, he did nothing but prove the Dutchman right.
Roofe will be staying at Ibrox next season and Morelos is certainly contracted to the Bears for 2022-23 even if he does enter the last year of his contract with his future beyond then up in the air so there was no room whatsoever for Itten which is exactly why he needed to go and it’s good to see him do so.
In other Rangers news, Connor Goldson looks set to leave Ibrox too this summer with his potential next destination back in England revealed on Wednesday (1 June).
