Journalist would be absolutely ‘astonished’ if Allan McGregor didn’t stay at Rangers

Daily Record journalist Mark Guidi has said he would be “absolutely astonished” if Allan McGregor doesn’t sign a new contract at Rangers.

The 40-year-old shot stopper is out of contract this summer and was seemingly given a send off during Rangers’ 2-0 Scottish Cup final win over Hearts.

However, Guidi believes the Gers legend will still be at the club come the start of next season.

Talking on the Go Radio Football Show on Tuesday [31 May], he said: “I don’t think he’s ready to give that up.

“He’s got far too much to offer as a goalkeeper.

“I’d be absolutely astonished if he does not sign a new one-year deal with Rangers.”

Call it a day

McGregor must realise it’s time to call it a day after a brilliant season for Rangers.

Does the shot-stopper believe he could achieve any more than he has this season in the 2022-23 campaign?

McGregor is clearly an excellent keeper, but age will ultimately catch up with the Rangers’ number one at some point.

By staying at the club, it delays the Gers’ search for a new long-term shot stopper.

If the right player is available now then Giovanni van Bronckhorst should not wait on the 40-year-old to make up his mind.

Too often we see players play for far too long and tarnish their excellent careers.

McGregor won’t want to end up in a situation where he is the second choice or struggling for form this season.

The Rangers keeper has enjoyed a wonderful playing career but it is time to move on to a coaching role at the club and maintain his legacy.
