Connor Goldson signs new Rangers contract, club throws curve ball with announcement
Connor Goldson has signed a new contract at Rangers for four more years, ending speculation over his future, the club have confirmed.
The Sun reported as recently as Tuesday (31 May) that the centre-back was still on his way out of Ibrox, with newly-promoted English Premier League side Nottingham Forest a key contender.
But the 29-year-old has instead extended his stay at the club in a major boost for Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
The former Brighton defender has been a key fixture in the backline since his arrival at the club in 2018, making well over 200 appearances in a Light Blues shirt.
The club played on the uncertainty over Goldson’s future in their announcement on Twitter, saying: “RangersFC today wishes to put on record our sincere thanks to Connor Goldson for his service to the club over the past four years…
“…as we look ahead to the next four years of having him at Ibrox”.
Massive
With the future of fellow defender Calvin Bassey unclear amid high interest it is welcome news for the club that the primary starting centre-back does not need to be replaced.
The Europa League run looked like it might be the last hurrah for some of the key elements of the 55th title-winning squad.
Allan McGregor may yet still retire, and rumblings of English interest in the likes of Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent continue.

But the first chip to fall has landed firmly in the club’s favour with the unexpected news that Goldson will remain.
There is a big job to do to regain the Scottish title after losing it back to Celtic, but this is a significant move to secure the base from which to build.
If the manager can bring in the right pieces to add to what he’s already got then there is reason for optimism at Ibrox next year.
In other Rangers news, a reported transfer target has spoken out on the chances of an arrival at the club and wants a move confirmed within a week.
