Rangers face ‘impossible’ challenge of keeping Calvin Bassey at Ibrox – Dean Jones

Journalist Dean Jones believes Rangers face an “impossible” task of trying to keep Calvin Bassey at the club this summer.

It had been reported by the Daily Mail on Friday [27 May], that West Ham and Aston Villa were targeting the defender, with Rangers slapping a £25million price tag on his head.

The Rangers defender has had a stellar campaign and was exceptional in the Gers’ gutwrenching Europa League final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Transfer insider Jones has suggested that it will be an impossible task for Rangers to keep hold of the defender beyond this summer.

As quoted by GIVEMESPORT, ex-Eurosport journalist Jones said: “It’s so difficult for them to keep Bassey, it seems like it will probably be impossible to keep him.

“He’s burst through at a moment when the transfer window is about to open, and he has played the game of his life in the last game of the season pretty much.

Wages

Ultimately, money talks in football and Bassey isn’t going to be on huge wages at Ibrox due to the nature of Scottish football and having only broken onto the scene this season.

Premier League clubs will know that paying the release clause and marginally increasing the defender’s wages would be an excellent piece of business.

Sadly for Rangers, Bassey’s epic Europa League final performance means that they are almost victims of their own success.

He produced a memorable display, on a huge stage and in front of a large audience.

His performance against Frankfurt has notified plenty of potential onlookers of his ability.

With the 22-year-old having two years left on his current deal, the club is in a good position to profit from any potential deal involving the defender.

From Bassey’s point of view, if he does move on this summer, it is crucial that he continues to play first team football regularly.

That’s why a move to a midtable Premier League side or West Ham, who are desperate for some defensive quality, would be a good move.

In other Rangers news, the club are ‘not convinced’ by a key first-team player and an early termination of his contract is extremely likely.
