Rangers defender Jack Simpson should be axed from the squad quickly

Rangers have a lot of depth at centre-half and it could be seen as too much because there is a player at Ibrox who is very rarely seen in action.

Weymouth-born Jack Simpson was only due to arrive in Glasgow at the beginning of this season after agreeing a pre-contract deal but Bournemouth, his previous employers, struck a deal with the Gers to allow him to join in February of last year.

Since then though, the 25-year-old has played just 13 games for the Light Blues and only four of those appearances have come under Giovanni van Bronckhorst after he took over from Steven Gerrard in November.

Part of the problem for Simpson is the fact that Connor Goldson, Calvin Bassey, Leon Balogun and Filip Helander are all Rangers players too and he simply cannot compete with ability like that on a weekly basis.

His cause to play more football won’t have been helped by his driving antics which has seen him be fined £920 after speeding on Anniesland Road in Glasgow back in April 2021, just two months after arriving in Scotland [The Sun].

He is surely one of the players most likely to leave Ibrox this summer if van Bronckhorst could choose who exits and who stays but the problem would be that he is still under contract for another three seasons so someone would have to pay to sign him.

Right now though, Rangers would be smart to allow him to leave for nothing if it meant that his wages would no longer come out of our back pockets because when he isn’t playing, he is a waste of money.

The club could lose Bassey though with Premier League interest and the futures of the other central defender is just as uncertain so he could be handed a lifeline yet, although the arrival of John Souttar in July won’t help his cause.

In other Rangers news, a former mentor of Bassey is urging clubs from England to come and sign the Nigerian if a particular price tag is set.
