Rangers should force Steven Gerrard to ‘bring an army’ if he wants Calvin Bassey

Steven Gerrard was very buoyant about keeping some of the best players at Rangers during his time at Ibrox and it might come back to haunt him.

The Times have reported that Aston Villa, the club where Gerrard now manages, are interested in signing 22-year-old defender Calvin Bassey and that a deal is getting closer to becoming a reality.

The Nigerian international has excelled since Gerrard left Glasgow under new boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst and that was on show for the world to see in the Europa League final as he put in a man of the match display in Seville.

The Villains were obviously very impressed by this and Gerrard’s inside knowledge has resulted in an approach but he should be ready to heed his own advice when it comes to the nitty, gritty of the deal.

While he was still Rangers boss, the former Liverpool and England captain was quizzed about other clubs wanting to sign his players and he was very blunt in his response.

“If anyone wants to take them away from me, they best bring an army with them,” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Daily Record, and van Bronckhorst should repeat the same line back to him.

We all know that Bassey’s stock has never been higher after starring at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan despite a penalty shootout defeat for the Gers and he was at it again in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park where the result was flipped (2-0 extra-time win against Hearts).

Villa aren’t the only club that’d quite like Bassey to play for them so we can afford to offer him around and see who is willing to cough up the most dough and then keep on raising it from there until only one club is left in the race.

In other Rangers news, a rarely-seen player at Ibrox could be set to return home with a Champions League club keen on signing him.
