Steven Davis urged to remain at Rangers amid Motherwell and St Mirren interest

Barry Ferguson has urged Rangers to hand midfielder Steven Davis an extension before his current deal at the club runs out.

The 37-year-old has been linked with a move to other Scottish clubs, but Ferguson believes he can still offer a lot to the Ibrox outfit.

Davis has not been a first-team regular but has been there whenever Giovanni van Bronckhorst has needed him to put in a shift.

Speaking on Go Radio, Ferguson said: “I am not being disrespectful (to Motherwell or St Mirren) but he still has the capability to play at Rangers.

“There’s no doubt about it. He might not start every game now but he is a model professional.

“He looks after himself and I would love to see him sign a contract extension and be there next season for Rangers.”

Makes sense

Davis may not offer too much on the field of play but he’s a quality option to have on the bench.

His experience rubs off on some of the younger players who now see him as an inspiration.

Sometimes, when the chips are down, clubs tend to look at their veterans for a way out and Davis can offer precisely that to them.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will know what he brings to the table and there’s a good chance he asks the club to hand him a new deal.

We wouldn’t mind either outcome as we know that the club needs to plan for the future and cannot afford to be stuck in the past.

That said, a player-cum-coach role may not be the worst idea in the world either, if Davis is open to it.

In other Rangers news, the club are ‘not convinced’ by a key first-team player and an early termination of his contract is extremely likely.
