Rangers want to sign Rakow goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic with Allan McGregor certain to retire

Rangers are in the hunt to sign Rakow’s Bosnian goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic with Allan McGregor looking “certain to retire this summer”, according to the Glasgow Evening Times.

The newspaper reported via their website on Monday (23 May) that Polish top-flight club Rakow “are keen to cash in on their star man while they can” with Kovacevic, 24, set to enter the final two years of his contract.

It is understood that qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League “could be a major catch for Kovacevic” with it looking as though McGregor, 40, is hanging up his gloves this summer.

Big gloves to fill

McGregor is a Rangers legend.

If he does retire this summer – and it does seem very likely that he will – he will have written himself into Ibrox history.

He’ll have made 445 appearances in all competitions for the Glasgow giants across two spells, won four league titles, three Scottish Cups and played in two Europa League/UEFA Cup finals.

No Rangers player will ever be able to say that did what McGregor did for the club and that’s why we feel as though it’s totally warranted to dub him an Ibrox legend.

When it comes to replacing him, it’ll be tough.

Ross Wilson’s transfers over the last couple of seasons have been underwhelming and we cannot say that Kovacevic’s name is one that fills us with excitement.

While he’s still a young goalkeeper at the age of 24, he’s never played for the Bosnia and Herzegovina international team and he’s never played outside of either his home country or Poland.

Of course, that doesn’t make him a bad player – it could mean the very opposite and that Wilson could be unearthing a real gem of a shot-stopper.

However, it’s hard to get excited at this stage when it seems as though Rangers’ hunt to sign Kovacevic doesn’t go further than simple interest.
