Kris Commons suggests perfect time for Rangers to sell Calvin Bassey

Kris Commons has suggested that Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst must sell some of his players and build the squad just like what Sir Alex Ferguson did at Manchester United.

The Sky Sports pundit says that with several players nearing the end of their contract, this gives the Dutchman the perfect opportunity to start something new.

He also adds that now could be the “perfect time” for the Gers to cash in on “outstanding” Calvin Bassey.

“It is inevitable that there is going to be an exodus of senior players from Ibrox this summer, with Allan McGregor and Connor Goldson chief among them. Steven Davis also looks likely to depart. Clubs will undoubtedly be interested in the likes of Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos,” wrote Commons for the Scottish Daily Mail (23 May, page 70).

“All three of them could easily go for the right price, especially since they are now entering the final year of their contracts. The club shouldn’t have allowed them to run down their deals.

“It could also be the perfect moment to cash-in on the outstanding Calvin Bassey, who was superb in both the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals.

“Bassey was moved from left-back to centre-back more through necessity earlier in the season, but he has been a revelation. Right now, he’s Rangers’ top asset.”

Wrong

The analogy with Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson is apt here.

Ferguson’s biggest legacy at Old Trafford was to rebuild the squad again and again, and he did so with great success.

Commons is trying to say that Van Bronckhorst should also adopt a similar stance. Like Ferguson, he shouldn’t be afraid to make bold decisions and sell players.

For instance, Ferguson sold Ruud van Nistelrooy, David Beckham, and Mark Hughes et al at the prime of their career to build something new.

However, Ferguson did what he felt best for the club. He didn’t sell Wayne Rooney when he had the chance.

Bassey is a fantastic potential and he is progressing at an alarming rate. He could go on to become a top-quality player. He will have his chance to move abroad and seal a big-money transfer, but not now.

Right now, Rangers need Bassey to lead the defence. Selling him will fetch money, no doubt, but it will go against the best interest of the club.

In other Rangers news, the German media has reacted to the Europa League final scenes, branding them a “scandal”.
