Charlie Adam on BBC Sportscene: Rangers will face heavy interest in Calvin Bassey, could bring in near £20million

Charlie Adam has insisted on BBC Sportscene that Rangers star Calvin Bassey could bring in £20million to the club this summer in transfer fees.

The pundit admitted that he believes that many European and English clubs are watching the Nigerian international, who could be flogged at Ibrox for big money.

Bassey made his 50th appearance of the season in the Scottish Cup win over Hearts, and was once again the standout player despite his young age.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene on Saturday night [21 May], Adam insisted that clubs are certainly looking at the young Nigerian going into the summer.

“There will be [interest], definitely there will be,” he said.

“He’s 22 years of age, I think there are a lot of European clubs looking at him, it wouldn’t surprise me if English clubs are looking at him. I watched him against Real Madrid in pre-season and he was the standout player then, and he’s only carried it on.

“In the market, you’re talking north of £15million, probably even closer to £20million.”

Going nowhere.

Nathan Patterson was allowed to go for big money, but that is because James Tavernier was ahead of him and the prospect of featuring regularly was low.

Bassey has forced his way into being a guaranteed starter under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and that has to be the message to the board if big bids come flying in.

The defender will play every single week next season, likely in the heart of the defence alongside either John Souttar or Filip Helander with Connor Goldson likely to leave once his contract expires.

After our amazing run in the Europa League, there is no need to sell players and that is what Ross Wilson will need to take into account, no matter how much money comes flying in.

Bassey would surely be happy to stick around, with Rangers the club who really kickstarted his career after he was allowed to leave Leicester for nothing.

Winning the Scottish Cup was just a little taste of what can happen, and hopefully, Bassey sticks around to make the Bears a really dominant force in the years to come.
