Steven Davis set to commence talks over Rangers future next week

Steven Davis has confirmed that he will commence talks with Rangers over his future next week.

After the 2-0 Scottish Cup victory against Hearts, the midfielder was quizzed about his plans for next season.

He admitted that it had been an emotional week for him and the club and that no concrete talks have still happened that have led to a final decision.

He told Premier Sports, via Glasgow Evening Times, “To be honest I really don’t know. I think we just said we’d speak after this.

“It’s been such an emotional week obviously with the European cup final – this doesn’t make up for it because it was a real good opportunity for us but we’re delighted to win this – then Jimmy Bell’s funeral yesterday.

“It has been a really emotional week and I’m delighted we could finish on a high.

“We’ll sit down next week or so and see where everything sits.”

Another year?

Davis is 37 already and he needs to be serious with the club as to what he expects from them and vice versa.

There’s no chance that he has it in his legs to play 90 minutes every week and for outfielders at that age, injuries are a major concern.

While he’s been a loyal servant and everyone at Ibrox loves him, they need to be smart about their next move.

They cannot just give him a new deal based on the player he was and rather gauge at what he’ll add to the club next season.

There will always be a place for him inside the dressing room and whether or not that’s in a playing capacity, remains to be seen.

Rangers will also have to look at the outgoings and the realistic players they can sign this summer before making a final decision on the likes of Davis.

We’re not expecting an outcome any time soon.

In other Rangers news, the club are ‘not convinced’ by a key first-team player and an early termination of his contract is extremely likely.
