Chris Sutton fires back at Robbie Savage as pair attempt to troll each other over Rangers heartbreak
Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage each attempted to troll each other over the action in the Europa League final which Rangers lost on penalties.
The Light Blues head back to Glasgow empty-handed after Aaron Ramsey’s miss in the shoot-out was the difference following a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.
Joe Aribo had put Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side ahead in the second half of normal time, and for just over 10 minutes they were on course to lift the trophy until Rafael Borre’s equaliser.
Savage sarcastically wrote on his Twitter account after the Nigerian forward had put the Gers ahead: “Wow. You ok Chris Sutton?”
But the morning after the match (19 May) Sutton responded in kind to his BT Sport colleague, writing on his page: “Yes thanks Rob. Thanks for asking. Lovely morning here.”
Tempting fate
There may have been a short period where fans dared to dream of glory in Seville, but few would have been confident unless they actually saw the trophy in James Tavernier’s hands.
It wasn’t to be, and cruel end to the dramatic run was unsurprisingly a source of delight for Sutton, who couldn’t resist a penalty-based dig after the final whistle, and judging by the state of Savage’s replies also thousands of other Celtic fans.
Smugness from the likes of Sutton is par for the course in a heated rivalry but it will make the pain of coming so close sting all the more.

It appears the attempted dig at Sutton was Savage’s loan foray into the Europa League drama last night, and after his international hero Ramsey was the unlucky player to miss the decisive penalty he may wish he had kept out of it.
It is understandably going to take the players and the fans a long time to get over the loss in the final, but even for those who will have regrets on the night, they shouldn’t forget the memories they made on the journey to get there.
The second-leg of the semi-final at Ibrox, and the 4-2 victory in Dortmund in particular will not be forgotten in a hurry.
In other Rangers news, one player was branded “terrible” by two separate BBC pundits for their role in one second half incident.
