BBC pundit Pat Nevin stunned by referee decision during Rangers Europa League final clash v Frankfurt
Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin was absolutely stunned that Connor Goldson didn’t concede a penalty during Rangers Europa League final clash with Frankfurt.
The Rangers defender was faced up by the attacker in the box during the second half with the game finely poised at 0-0 and seemed to foul him, but the referee and VAR opted against a penalty despite clear contact.
BBC pundit Nevin, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live [May 18, 21:19], couldn’t believe the decision and claimed the light blues were ‘very lucky’ to get away with it and had it been down the other end they’d have been ‘screaming for a penalty’.

“That was very concerning,” he said. “I don’t think Goldson got that right. I thought that was a penalty. Rangers are very lucky.
“You’d be screaming for a penalty if that happened at the other end.”
Massive
Those types of decisions are absolutely crucial, especially in big games, and Rangers have been on the right end of a number of them across the tournament.
This is another instance of them getting lucky, as Goldson made no contact on the ball and definitely made contact with the player.

The only question mark really is the amount of contact, as admittedly there wasn’t much. However we’ve seen penalties given for far less in the past and he can count himself lucky.
Overall it wasn’t the greatest of games for the defender, who should have done better for the Frankfurt equaliser too and had sloppy passing throughout the game.
It’s not a game he’ll want to remember for his performance or for the result in the future, but hopefully he can put it behind him ahead of the Scottish Cup final against Hearts at the weekend.
