Rangers penalty defeat v Frankfurt sparks Chris Sutton penalty jibe on Twitter

Rangers suffered Europa League final heartbreak as they were beaten on penalties by Eintracht Frankfurt on a sweltering night in Seville.

Joe Aribo thought he had given the Light Blues the winning goal in the second half but Rafael Borre quickly levelled the scores to take the game to extra time.

Not much happened in that extra 30 minutes and the game went to penalties where Aaron Ramsey was the only player to miss from 12 yards to hand the trophy to the Bundesliga side.

Chris Sutton watched the game from home and was very quick to react to the result in Spain, lauding the effort the Rangers side had put in all season.

“Great effort in the Europa League from Rangers and the players have given their all,” Sutton said via his personal Twitter account. “With the amount of penalties they’ve been awarded this season I fancied them in the shootout mind. Well done to Frankfurt though.”

Uncalled for

Sutton’s Celtic allegiances are obvious to everyone and everything he says about the Gers has to be taken with a pinch of salt but this is very uncalled for at this time.

Rangers

The Hoops, who he used to play for, didn’t even beat Norway’s best team in the competition below this and we’ve gone and stuffed two Bundesliga sides on our way to the final.

His suggestion that we get given penalties left, right and centre is a bit exaggerated too considering that Celtic also get some questionably favourable decisions go their way in Scottish Premiership action.

The fact of the matter is that a penalty shootout is a lottery, as we’ve all just witnessed, and in the 10 penalties taken, nine of them were unsaveable.

Ramsey will curse this moment for the rest of his life but that won’t change the way many Rangers fans feel about him and if he wants to come back next season, he’d be more than welcome at Ibrox.
