Jamie Carragher slams Boris Johnson for Rangers Europa League video

Jamie Carragher has slammed Prime Minister Boris Johnson as a “charlatan” after he released a video message wishing Rangers good luck.

After mentioning the upcoming Europa League final in the House of Commons earlier on Wednesday (18 May), a video was released from Johnson’s official Twitter account directed at Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.

Referencing the club’s drop to the bottom of the Scottish leagues and subsequent climb he says “a lot has happened since you last had a game like this” and that “whatever happens on the pitch I couldn’t be happier to see you flying the flag out in Spain, and I know you’ll do us all proud”.

Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Carragher was highly unimpressed, reacting on his Twitter account by posting alongside a clown emoji: “This charlatan needs an autocue because he’s not got a clue who Rangers are & what the Europa League is.”

The British Prime Minister has never demonstrated a major grasp of what is going on in the world of football, or plenty of other things, so Carragher is probably basically right.

He is sure to be firmly on the bandwagon if the Gers finish the job and lift the title in Seville, but outside of this European achievement it is unlikely he would have had a great deal of awareness regarding events at Ibrox.

There has to be a strong chance that they do bring home the trophy, as they have already overcome two occupants of the Bundesliga top four in Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, while Frankfurt currently sit in 11th.

The Germans’ form in Europe has been a different level however and they knocked out La Liga giants Barcelona on their own run to the final.

Despite what Johnson may or may not be aware of, even being present in the final a decade after nearly going out of existence is a major achievement for the Light Blues.

And with just the 1972 Cup Winners’ Cup to turn to in terms of European achievements so far, victory in Spain would truly be an historic achievement.

In other Rangers news, Johnson’s Conservative colleague got in a dig at his Edinburgh-based Labour and SNP rivals on the subject of the final in the House of Commons.
