BBC pundits Pat Nevin and Mark Hateley blast Rangers man Connor Goldson for Europa League final

Connor Goldson was “terrible” according to both Pat Nevin and Mark Hateley for an error which almost cost Rangers in Seville.

Just past the hour in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt the big defender’s error let Japanese forward Daichi Kamada in for a golden opportunity.

Luckily for the Light Blues man Kamada could only lift the ball onto the roof of the net, but the panic had set in and the Germans soon scored through Rafael Borre, and the BBC pair were thoroughly unimpressed.

Nevin said on BBC 5 Live, via the BBC Sport liveblog: “Terrible error by Goldson. Kamada should score there. [Allan] McGregor narrows the angle but every single white shirt expected that to drop and nestle in the net.”

Former Bears forward Hateley said on BBC Sportsound, via the liveblog: ‘Terrible first touch from Connor Goldson. Kamada should score, that’s a golden opportunity. Frankfurst do create a lot of chances for themselves but that was weak in front of goal.”

Let off

Goldson had a nightmare second half in the final, as he had already survived a penalty shout and a VAR review, and let the ball run across him for the equaliser.

While the goal that was scored to cancel out Joe Aribo’s opener was a far less obvious error on the English defender’s part, it added to a shaky-looking performance as the game went on.

The pressure was increasing as the Gers looked to protect what they had in search of a first European trophy in 50 years.

But on a number of occasions it appeared he was the likeliest avenue for the Germans to get back into the game.

In what may prove to be one of his last games for the club, with his future unclear past the summer, it was an unfortunate few sequences, although he looked calmer again in the extra period.

And with a painful defeat eventually confirmed in the penalty shoot-out, it goes down as a heartbreaking missed opportunity.

Goldson has been a key member of this squad that achieved so much over the last couple of seasons and he was so unlucky on the grand stage.
