‘He is a true legend’ – Gio van Bronckhorst highlights big John Grieg help for Rangers ahead of Europa League final

Rangers manager Gio van Bronckhorst believes that having someone around with the legendary status of John Grieg will be of big help for his players ahead of the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The much-awaited contest will be played on Wednesday at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium in Seville.

Van Bronckhorst was quoted in a report by Daily Record where he stated the 79-year-old’s words about the historic 1972 triumph of the club in the European Cup Winners’ Cup which remains the side’s only continental title to take.

“John is telling that story about 1972 every day,” he said. “It’s good to have. I love having John Greig around because he is a true legend.

“In my first years as a player here, we had a really good head of communications then. It was really nice to have him around.

“But I think it’s also very important for the players to hear those stories, of the influence and experience they had and what it meant to them. That’s very important because this club is all about history.”

History in the making

The game will be a historic one for the Rangers as they are eyeing their first major European title when they will take the field on Wednesday against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The words of a legend like Greig, who was voted as ‘The Greatest Ever Ranger’ in 1999 by the Rangers supporters, would definitely boost the morale of the players who will be slightly nervous going into the encounter.

Rangers booked their place in the last two at the expense of RB Leipzig with a 3-2 aggregate win over the two legs.

However, in Rangers’ way will be a strong Frankfurt side who will make it tough for the opposition to take the title home.

The Eagles have already knocked out favourites FC Barcelona in the last eight contest in both home and away fixtures and deservedly booked their place in the grand finale after getting the better of West Ham over the two legs.

In other Rangers news, One 25-year-old could now be deemed as surplus to requirements at Ibrox this season.
