Charlie Nicholas shares ‘gulf’ at Rangers that would make Seville win great

Charlie Nicholas has insisted that Rangers winning the Europa League on Wednesday [May 18] would be one of their “greatest achievements”.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side takes on Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville who are yet to be beaten in the tournament.

Given the Light Blues’ financial “gulf”, Nicholas insisted a win at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium would trump the club’s 1972 European success.

He told Scottish Daily Express: “If Rangers were to lift the Europa League trophy tomorrow night then it would surpass their 1972 Cup Winners Cup triumph.

“I do think this could be one of Rangers’ greatest achievements if they can beat Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.

“The Light Blues’ biggest previous European achievement was beating Dynamo Moscow to lift their first trophy 50 years ago.

“That was some achievement but I just think with the gulf in finances that this would be even bigger.

“I know it is not the European Cup or the Champions League but it would still be massive for Rangers and Scottish football.”

David v Goliath.

There will be a whole generation of Rangers fans that can’t remember the 1972 and they will be desperate to see their own European success.

Nicholas is spot on, if the Gers do go on to win the Europa League it would be bigger than the previous success.

Football was played on a much more level playing field back in the day but now the Scots find themselves competing against clubs with vast amounts of wealth which certainly gives them an advantage.

The Bears certainly don’t have this luxury but their never say die attitude this year in Europe has seen them knock out many Goliaths as they fulfil their role as David.

Van Bronckhorst’s side really can’t afford to get carried away though. They face their toughest opponent yet in Eintracht Frankfurt – a team that has themselves been underdogs for most of the tournament but has exceeded all expectations and will – much like the Light Blues – want to have the trophy to show for it.
