Ally McCoist insists midfielder has to start in Europa League final

Ally McCoist believes Rangers midfielder Aaron Ramsey has to start in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt if he is fit.

The midfielder featured for 60 minutes in Rangers’ 3-1 win over Hearts in their final Scottish Premiership match of the season on Saturday [14 May]

Ramsey suffered a hamstring injury in Rangers’ 2-1 Old Firm victory over Celtic in the Scottish Cup on April 17th.

McCoist believes a player of Ramsey’s quality simply has to start in Sevilla if he is fit.

Talking on talkSPORT breakfast [06:37, 17 May], McCoist said: “Ramsey is one for me where if he’s fit you’ve got to start him.

“You can’t bring someone like Ramsey to the football club and not play him in a game like this.”

Decisions

There are plenty of big decisions for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to make heading into one of the biggest nights in the Rangers’ recent history.

The Gers made it through the semi-final playing without an out and out striker and it’s perhaps a tactic they should adopt again in Sevilla.

Joe Aribo has adapted well to a more central position and after being rested against Hearts and looks a shoo-in to start.

However, where he starts on the pitch remains to be seen, with Kemar Roofe coming back into contention and Ramsey pushing to start.

After their previous European displays, it would be a gamble by van Bronkhorst to tinker too much with their winning formula.

The Gers have been formidable, particularly at Ibrox.

However, could the game being away from their electric home lead the Rangers boss into adapting his tactics slightly?

Regardless of their line-up, this group of players will fancy their chances against Frankfurt, who sit seven places below Rangers’ previous opponents, RB Leipzig.
