Michael Stewart stunned on BBC by ‘Brilliant’ Cole McKinnon in Rangers win v Hearts

Michael Stewart was left stunned by Rangers sensation Cole McKinnon after his debut goal in the 3-1 win over Hearts on Saturday afternoon.

The BBC Sportscene pundit admitted it was a “brilliant” finish by the young wonder after he swivelled in the box and fired past Craig Gordon at Tynecastle.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst was rewarded for his trust in youth on the final day of the Scottish Premiership, with Alex Lowry also finding the back of the net with some quality.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene as shared on Twitter on Sunday evening [15 May], Stewart couldn’t help but heap praise on the youngsters coming through.

“I think the two finishes from the youngsters there, Lowry and McKinnon, they’ve both catch Craig Gordon by surprise because this one is a great finish,” he said.

“His first touch is behind him, and I don’t think Craig Gordon is expecting him to swivel and get the strike away so quickly, and ultimately he finds the bottom corner for a brilliant goal.”

Quality.

The future really is bright at Ibrox.

We are fortunate to have so many quality talents coming through at Auchenhowie, and Van Bronckhorst, along with his backroom staff appear to be the perfect team for them.

The likes of Lowry and McKinnon will get the headlines for their quality goals, of course, but then you have to give out mentions to Adam Devine, Leon King, Charlie McCann, Tony Weston and Ross McCausland.

Even having to name that many is brilliant, with teams usually only handing out one or two debuts to academy players throughout a gruelling season.

We cannot wait to see what the future holds, but McKinnon may have to wait a little while longer before coming a consistent fixture of this side, even with his goal over the weekend.

Lowry certainly looks to be the next in line for consistent minutes under Van Bronckhorst, but the motivation is certainly there for even more of our homegrown talent to make a name for themselves.
