Michael Stewart slams Rangers ace Amad Diallo on BBC Sportscene despite win v Ross County
Michael Stewart took a chance to slam Amad Diallo on BBC Sportscene despite the Rangers loanee scoring in the 4-1 win against Ross County at Ibrox on Wednesday night.
Diallo, 19, has admittedly had a rather underwhelming loan spell at Ibrox after joining from Manchester United in the January transfer window.
However, the teenage attacker has looked bright and managed to score in each of his last two appearances for the Gers, which have come as a substitute.
Still, Stewart is unimpressed by the Ivory Coast international’s contribution in Govan.
“Look, there’s no doubt Diallo’s got ability – that is without question,” Stewart said on BBC Scotland’s Sportscene on Wednesday night (11 May), as shown on BBC iPlayer.
“But you need to have a wee bit more than that if you’re going to have a big impact at a club like Rangers who are going for trophies.
“It’s been a wee bit disappointing on the whole but this is a nice finish for him to round off what was a good, professional performance from Rangers.”
Got a point?
Diallo’s loan spell at Rangers hasn’t been great, let’s be real.
He’s played just 11 times for us since arriving in January and he’s only made Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s starting line-up on four occasions.
Half of those starts were in his first two matches for the Light Blues when he scored straight away on his debut against Ross County on 29 January.
He then started against Celtic on 2 February and was substituted off at half-time by van Bronckhorst after a very underwhelming performance.
Diallo’s not started in the Scottish Premiership since that Old Firm game.
Why? It doesn’t seem like van Bronckhorst trusts him just yet.
We’d be happy for Diallo to stay another season because his last two outings will have no doubt boosted his confidence a bit.
But this is a player who hasn’t been played once in the Europa League and has been handed just three minutes of Old Firm football in three meetings with Celtic since that game in early February.
Diallo’s got potential but he has been poor.
However, Stewart had no right to criticise the young lad on Sportscene when he’d just scored a goal.
