Rangers youngster Stephen Kelly could get first-team minutes next season

Rangers youngster Stephen Kelly could reportedly get first-team minutes next season after spending this campaign out on loan.

According to Football Scotland, Kelly’s progression in the Rangers ranks in currently being stepped up.

The 22-year-old is not expected to leave next season, with his deal running out in 2023, and could get first-team football under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Good move?

Kelly has spent the current season out on loan at Salford City where he has put in a decent shift.

He’s been a regular for the English club and is proving why he should be considered for the senior Gers team next season.

Van Bronckhorst will have not got much time to see him on the training pitch but will surely be checking the loan reports his staff compiles for him.

There’s every reason to be impressed with his progression but that is not enough to guarantee game time.

Managers like to work with players day in and day out to gauge if they are good fits for the senior team.

Pre season will give the Dutchman a good chance to see if Kelly is up to the first-team role or if his progress will be better suited with another loan spell.

Regardless of what the decision is, the fact that he’s being considered suggests that he’s not likely to be sold which is a good move as he could be an important squad player in the coming years.

In other Rangers news, the club are ‘not convinced’ by a key first-team player and an early termination of his contract is extremely likely.
