Kris Commons strongly suspects Connor Goldson will leave Rangers as free agent
Kris Commons strongly suspects that Rangers defender Connor Goldson will leave Ibrox at the end of the season.
The 29-year-old has been rock solid at the back this season, but he is likely to leave the club following the expiry of his contract.
The Sky Sports pundit feels that it is mainly due to the “financial situation”, as Goldson may feel he has one big contract left in him.
“It’s all gone quiet with regards to his future and I strongly suspect there’s now an acceptance that he will be moving on as a free agent in the summer,” wrote Commons for the Daily Mail (The Verdict, 9 May, page 16).
“The fact that he has allowed his contract to run down this far into the season tells me one thing – he’s almost certainly got something sorted elsewhere.
“Some people might think the incentive of Champions League football would convince him to stay, but I disagree. It looks to me like his mind is already made up.
“It’s a financial decision more than anything else. Goldson is now 29 years old. He probably feels like he has one big contract left in him.
“You can’t hold that against him because he has been a terrific servant to Rangers from the moment he walked through the door in 2018. He’s now coming towards the end of his fourth season at Ibrox and he has played over 50 games in every campaign.”
Goldson has been a terrific servant to the club and he will always be considered a cult hero.
He joined the club at a difficult time and has been a regular member of the side, managing over 50 games in every campaign.
Goldson is an epitome of consistency and he rarely get injured. Losing him for free will be a blow for the club, but he has repaid every penny the club spent on him.
It’s really unfortunate that the two parties couldn’t reach an agreement, and it looks like even if the Gers win the Europa League, he won’t stay beyond the summer.
This summer transfer window will be massive for the club. It remains to be seen if Giovanni van Bronckhorst brings any new defender.
John Souttar will join in the summer from Hearts, and it looks a cracking piece of business already.
Likewise, Calvin Bassey has emerged as a reliable option while Leon King looks like an exciting young prospect.
