Michael Stewart: Van Bronckhorst will be disappointed with Sakala after what happened in Rangers win

Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be “disappointed” by Fashion Sakala’s finishing in Rangers’ 2-0 win against Dundee United, according to Michael Stewart.

Sakala, 25, won a penalty and assisted Amad Diallo’s goal in the second half but he should have scored at least a couple of his own in the opening 45 minutes.

After one missed opportunity, Stewart suggested Sakala buckled under the pressure of the Dundee United defence when one of his changes went begging.

“It’s a really big chance,” said Stewart on BBC Scotland’s Sportscene show on 8 May [07:21pm].

“That man will be a wee bit disappointed that the striker’s not been able to find the back of the net.

“Connor Goldson, lovely pick out.

“It’s a great chop [by Sakala] to get it on his left foot but I think the pressure from [Ryan] Edwards is just enough to unsettle the striker as he misses the target.”

Not his day

Sakala didn’t have the best of days in front of goal.

The Zambia international has scored 11 times in 47 appearances across all competitions for the Light Blues this season.

But he should have at the very least made it 12 goals against Dundee United at Ibrox on 8 May.

Sakala’s finishing has always been a bit of a concern.

Van Bronckhorst doesn’t seem to fully trust him either with Joe Aribo and Scott Arfield getting game-time as a striker ahead of Sakala while Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe are injured.

It just shows how badly we need to add to our striker position in the summer transfer window.

If Morelos goes as he’ll be in the final year of his contract, Ross Wilson and van Bronckhorst will have their work cut out to find a replacement.

However, Wilson’s recruits have been underwhelming, in all honesty, so we don’t have that much faith in him being able to pull off a coup in the same way we did when Morelos arrived at Ibrox in 2017.

In other Rangers news, one player scored just 4/10 in our player ratings against Dundee United.
