Connor Goldson gushes over Rangers defender Calvin Bassey

Connor Goldson has showered heaps of praise on Rangers defender Calvin Bassey, saying he has the “world at his feet”.

Goldson, who could leave the club at the end of the season as a free agent, believes that Bassey can be as good as Arsenal defender Gabriel.

Bassey was superb in the Europa League second leg tie against RB Leipzig on Thursday (5 May) along with Goldson.

“I think he has got the world at his feet. I really believe he can go on and be whatever he wants to be,” said Goldson as quoted by The National.

“The pace, the strength and being left-footed, are attributes you can only dream of and I said it to him before this season that this had to be his breakthrough year.

“He was 21 and is now 22 and hadn’t played as much as other players at that age, so I said that to him at the start of the season and he took it on board.

“He went away for the off-season and worked really hard. He had a private trainer over the summer and came back absolutely flying. When he has got his chance he hasn’t let us down.

“You look at the top teams now and they always want a left-footed centre-back.

“Whether he wants to play at centre-back or left-back, I don’t know. But if Calvin does want to play at centre-back and you look at the top teams, they all want one to be right-footed and one to be left-footed.

“Take Gabriel at Arsenal – I’m not saying Calvin is as good as him right now but look at the build, the stature, his pace and his left foot is nice. I think Calvin, over time and with experience, can easily get to that level.”

Huge talent

Goldson is spot on here. This has been a fabulous campaign for the young defender and he has passed with flying colours.

The 22-year-old has made 26 appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season and has played in multiple roles at the back.

While he started off well under Steven Gerrard, it is under Giovanni van Bronckhorst that he has taken his game to a new level.

The Dutchman has given him the confidence to show his talent, and he has now enjoyed a breakthrough season. He is strong, fast, intelligent, and fearless – what more can you ask for?

Goldson is probably right that over time, Bassey will gain more experience which will help him become an even better player.

Gabriel has established himself as an accomplished defender for Arsenal, and Bassey has the talent to reach that level.

He is still far from the finished product, but there are signs that he can grow into a top-quality defender.
