BBC Scotland commentator slams 'dreadful' John Lundstram in Rangers draw v Celtic

BBC Scotland commentator Alasdair Lamont blasted John Lundstram when he wasted a big chance for Rangers to take the lead against Celtic on Sunday.

When the score was 1-1 at Parkhead, Fashion Sakala managed to force an error from Joe Hart so that the Celtic goalkeeper conceded possession close to goal.

Lundstram ended up with the ball at his feet but his cross into the box was wild and went out of play for a goal-kick.

Lamont was less than impressed.

“Joe Hart’s taken a big chance,” said Lamont on BBC Sportscene on Sunday night [1 May, 07:28pm].

“It’s Ryan Kent now looking to put the shot away, Rangers have it in a dangerous position.

“Lundstram with an absolutely dreadful cross and Celtic are off the hook.”

It was a big wasted opportunity by Lundstram but that cannot deflect from the fact that the ex-Sheffield United midfielder was one of the best players on the pitch at Celtic Park.

Lundstram was superb both in and out of possession in the final Old Firm derby of the season.

He had a slow start to life at Ibrox after joining on a free last summer but has more than made up for that since Giovanni van Bronckhorst came in.

Weirdly, the midfielder is doing a lot better for the former left-back than he did for Steven Gerrard and has definitely saved some of his strongest performances for this side of 2022.

According to stats by WhoScored, Lundstram completed 91 per cent of his passes against Celtic, won all four of his tackles he attempted and also made four interceptions.

Lundstram also made one key pass, made two clearances and wasn’t dispossessed once.

If you want to criticise Lundstram for wasting one opportunity, you cannot do so and ignore his overall stats for the game.

He was fantastic.

In other Rangers news, Celtic have resorted to ridiculous whataboutery after alleged incidents at Parkhead on Sunday.
