Andy Walker reacts as Celtic fans call for John Beaton penalty decision v Rangers

Andy Walker rubbished calls for Celtic to be awarded a penalty in the second half of their 1-1 draw against Rangers on Sunday.

Tom Rogic’s cross from the right-hand side seemed to hit John Lundstram’s arm inside the penalty, leading to widespread appeals from Celtic fans and players inside Parkhead.

However, referee John Beaton waved away those appeals and Walker agrees it was the right call by the whistler.

“Tom Rogic has fired it into the box there with the outside of the left foot. I don’t think it’s a handball by Lundstram. I think it hits his stomach,” said Walker on Sky Sports Main Event [1 May, 01:33pm].

Ally McCoist then said: “If you give a penalty for that we’ll pack up and go home, the lot of us.”

Walker then added: “Maybe the ball hits his arm but it’s nowhere near out of his body.

“It’s not a penalty.”

Never a penalty

It’s hard to see why the Celtic fans and players were so up in arms about the ball hitting Lundstram’s arm.

It did hit the midfielder’s arm but his arm was tucked in and not in an unnatural position.

It was a complete accident and nothing the Gers player could have done about it so it was good to see Beaton ignore the ridiculous Celtic appeals.

Beaton had a good game as the referee on Sunday.

Bobby Madden made headlines in the last Old Firm derby after what was, admittedly, a very poor performance by him when the Light Blues won in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Beaton, on the other hand, was a lot better this weekend. Although the game wasn’t a usual feisty Old Firm derby.

Rangers’ hopes of winning the Scottish Premiership title are more than likely over after failing to win at Celtic Park.

But at least we have a cup final and a Europa League semi on the horizon.
