Mark Warburton gushes over Rangers skipper James Tavernier

Mark Warburton has showered heaps of praise on Rangers skipper James Tavernier ahead of their Europa League clash against RB Leipzig.

With the Gers missing some key players for this game, the onus of responsibility falls on the shoulders of the skipper, and Warburton, the former Bears boss, has suggested that Tavernier will be a big threat for the German side.

Five years ago Warburton led the Bears to Leipzig for a winter break friendly where they suffered a 4-0 defeat.

“I’m always delighted to see him get success,” said Warburton to The Scottish Sun.

“Without doubt he’s got to go down as one of the best Rangers players. Long may that continue.

“Tavernier’s a big threat to Leipzig, make no mistake.

“Allied to his distribution and his work ethic and you’ve got a player delivering at the level he is for a club like Rangers.

“James’ goalscoring record for Rangers has been marvellous.

“Knowing him, he’ll be disappointed with his set-piece stats, but there are very few full-backs who can match his average goals a season and assists.

“His awareness of people in the box, the way he whips in the perfect cross, his decision making — he is a top modern-day full-back.”

Outstanding

Tavernier was signed from Wigan for just £220,000 in 2015, and he has proved to be one of the best bargain signings of all time in the club’s history.

Alfredo Morelos has received the Rangers’ player of the year award this week, but Tam McManus felt that Tavernier should have shared that award too.

Tavernier has scored 15 goals in all competitions this season and has provided 16 assists for the Gers.

He has always delivered for the club in big games, and once again, he will be seen as a big threat to Leipzig.

Tavernier, for some reason, doesn’t get the appreciation he deserves, but he is a top-quality player and a great asset for the club. He is a true leader and he has improved immensely in the last few years.

The Gers will have to be smart in the approach against Leipzig who are in terrific form at the moment. A draw would be an ideal result for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side.
