Former Rangers star Alan Hutton showers praise on Gers ahead of Semi-Final

Rangers have been defying the odds in the Europa League this season and face RB Leipzig tonight in the first leg of the Semi-Final.

It’s the club’s first European semi-final since they defeated Fiorentina 14 years ago on penalties.

Former Gers defender Alan Hutton has heaped praise on the Ibrox club for reaching this stage of the competition against all expectations.

Speaking on BT Sport, Hutton commented: “I mean, it’s actually unbelievable when you think the way they kicked off campaign.

“It was difficult with two defeats to where they are at this moment in time and knocking out the favourites.

“Every time the question has been asked of them, they’ve come up with the answer and now you’re in the Semi-Final anything can happen.”

History repeating itself?

Giovanni Van Bronckhorst could follow in the footsteps of Gers icon Walter Smith as he attempts to guide the Glasgow giants to the Europa League Final.

Smith steered his team to the UEFA Cup Final in 2008 when the Gers knocked out Fiorentina and prior to that, the Ibrox club were successful against Bayern Munich in 1972 as they defeated the German club before going on to lift the European Cup Winners’ Cup in Barcelona.

With the Europa League Final, like the memorable day in 1972, falling in Spain, Rangers fans are hopeful that history can repeat itself and they can go one better than their 2008 defeat to Zenit St Petersburg.

Van Bronckhorst’s side have already knocked out German opponents in this season’s competition, winning 4-2 away from home against Borussia Dortmund before drawing 2-2 at home to advance against all odds.

Victories over Red Star Belgrade and Braga followed as the Scottish Premiership club continued to shock all of Europe.

Can they continue their incredible run with a memorable Semi-Final performance this evening?
