Kris Boyd raises Fashion Sakala ahead of RB Leipzig v Rangers

Kris Boyd has raised his doubts about Rangers forward Fashion Sakala ahead of their Europa League clash against RB Leipzig.

The Light Blues face the Bundesliga outfit in the semi-final at the Red Bull Arena without key men Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe through injury.

Despite Giovanni van Bronckhorst backing the 25 year-old as a striker, Boyd has questioned whether it is his best position.

He told The Herald: “The loss of Alfredo Morelos was a big blow, but losing Roofe is an even bigger blow for me.

“You had Roofe to replace Morelos but there’s no one really to replace Roofe.

“I know Sakala played on Saturday but you’ve got to look at the last European game and that wasn’t his best performance.

“You know what you’re going to get from Sakala but I still think he’s better coming off the wing.

“I think Sakala gives you more from the wide areas than what he does through the middle.”

He added: “Maybe it was just a one off with Sakala in Braga but you could see the players were frustrated with him as well.”

Double header.

This game is all about surviving for Rangers. They are without several key men for the clash and it is imperative the players who fill in for them put in a good display to ensure the tie isn’t wrapped up before the Ibrox return.

That sounds very negative given the Gers’ brilliant run to the final but it is hard to see a world in which Leipzig have not analysed their previous games and learnt from the other team’s mistakes. They have a catalogue of footage to look at including the games against fellow Bundesliga opponents, Borussia Dortmund.

They will certainly be treating the Bears with the respect they deserve after knocking out the second-best team in Germany.

One major benefit is van Bronckhorst resting his key players as he unusually trusted the depth of his squad against Motherwell on the weekend.

Hopefully, the Light Blues can return to Scotland unscathed to allow the Ibrox factor to come into play in the second leg.
